I’ve been writing for decades.
Blogs, notes on scraps of paper, journals, an e-book, a book about my life still in progress (both the book and my life HA), grants, research papers, worksheets on goal-setting, self-awareness, core values and on and on. (If you want the worksheets on goal-setting, etc. just write me at email@example.com and I will send them to you.)
I love to write.
But I’ve never made any money at it.
I’m sure you’ve all seen this saying:
Do what you love and the money will follow.
Well I want to binge watch Law and Order, and drink margaritas all day. No money will follow that – but I could become an alcoholic.
Sure, I know that isn’t what the quote is saying literally. But it doesn’t say literally. Perhaps the quote should be this instead:
Do what you love and the money will follow. Ok not literally because you have to create a product people like and then work your ass off selling it to them.
I’ve created products before that no one purchased. People told me they were good products, but uh, no thanks, I ain’t buying it. I spent a lot of time giving away freebies to people and most of them didn’t give a shit about me. The harsh reality of life. I wrapped myself up in an external product, and it became a reflection of my worth.
Like my blog?
Well folks, here’s the big news:
It’s no longer about you, it’s all about me!
Not that I don’t care. I care a great deal. I just no longer care if you like what I write. If you do like it and get some value great! If not, oh well.
It’s been the last vestige of giving a shit. And it was the hardest to let go of.
Moral of this little story here – Make it all about you. You can care about others and the world around you, but maybe it’s time to stop wrapping your worth up in what they think of you.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
